Ex-Jersey FA Chief Unveils Memoir and Boosts Grassroots Football in Nigeria
Ricky Weir, former president of the Jersey Football Association, has returned to Nigeria to promote his award-winning memoir Illegitimately Blessed and drive grassroots football development. He hopes his personal story of identity, resilience and belonging will inspire readers across Africa. Beyond book events, he officiated at the launch of the 5Stars Premier League in Abuja and championed Walking Football at the Eagle Club Pitch in Lagos. The slow-paced, non-contact game now features league programmes and women’s teams, underlining its growing appeal. Born to a Nigerian father and raised in Scotland by adoptive parents, Weir delayed tracing his roots out of respect for his family. His memoir explores themes of family, discrimination and overcoming challenges, not just football. Now holding a Nigerian passport, he plans to spend more time in the country and focus his foundation’s projects here, using sport and literature to inspire young Nigerians.
