Lagos Reports 16.4 Million Nuisance Calls in 15 Months, Urges Responsible Use of Emergency Lines
The Lagos State Command and Control Centre (LSCCC) handled 24.15 million calls from January 2025 to April 2026. Of these, 16.39 million—67.9%—were hoax or nuisance calls that strained resources and slowed responses to real emergencies. In 2025, the centre recorded 1,972 valid incidents, with fire outbreaks accounting for 1,685 cases. March saw the highest monthly incidents at 210, while heavy rains in August reduced activity to 113 emergencies. Alimosho LGA topped the list with 180 emergencies, followed by Eti-Osa (156) and Ikeja (139). The LSCCC warns that prank calls can block genuine distress calls and jeopardise lives. To tackle the surge in fake calls, the state plans to deploy AI-powered call routing and intelligent filtering. Residents are urged to use emergency numbers responsibly to ensure prompt help when it truly matters.
