Court of Appeal Holds Judgment Date for INEC’s 2027 Election Timetable Appeals

The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has reserved judgment in two appeals by INEC challenging Federal High Court decisions that nullified parts of its 2027 election timetable. The Federal High Court had ruled fully in favour of the Youth Party of Nigeria and granted mixed reliefs in the suit by the Social Democratic Party, limiting INEC’s ability to set certain pre-election deadlines. INEC’s lead counsel argued the commission’s powers are clearly established under the Constitution and the Electoral Act to issue election guidelines. INEC also moved applications to bar YPN from filing late briefs and opposed extension requests. The panel led by Justice Adebukola Bankole will communicate the judgment date to the parties in due course.

True, the delayed judgment will unsettle INEC's preparation timeline and force a rush on key tasks.

It's interesting that the Court of Appeal scheduled judgment on INEC's appeals without explaining its timeline clarity issues first.

Scheduling dates is okay, but prioritizing timeline clarity first would have helped voters understand the process better.

Setting a new judgment date won't necessarily resolve complaints about the original timetable's inconsistencies.

Stakeholders should prepare alternate schedules and legal briefs ahead of the appeal outcome to avoid further delays.
