FG Files 13-count Treason Charge Against Alleged Coup Plotters in Tinubu Overthrow Bid

The federal government has arraigned six suspects in Abuja on a 13-count treason charge. The accused include a retired major general, a former naval captain and a serving police inspector. Authorities allege they conspired to wage war against Nigeria and topple President Bola Tinubu. The plot first came to light after the Independence Day parade scheduled for October 1, 2025 was abruptly cancelled. Defence headquarters later confirmed that 16 officers had been arrested over the alleged coup attempt, with investigations following military procedures. Families of the detained officers have called for open trials and access to their loved ones. Protests by relatives at the National Assembly in April demanded a speedy judicial process and transparency over the alleged masterminds.

I think the FG likely gathered solid proof, so the evidence should hold strong in court.

Which type of evidence—documents, witness testimony, or digital data—do you find most uncertain in this case?

It seems unusual for high-ranking officers and a police inspector to face treason charges without a clear public summary of the alleged conspiracy.

I'm not convinced every accusation here qualifies as treason; some might be overblown or politically motivated rumors.

Lawyers and legal observers should track court proceedings closely to understand how this case could reshape civil-military relations in Nigeria.
