Edo High Court Acquits DHL Benin Manager Nuhu Omokide of Missing Parcel Charges

The Edo State High Court in Benin City has acquitted Mr Nuhu Omokide of all charges over a parcel said to have gone missing on its way to the United Kingdom. Justice E. G. Adekanmbi ruled that the earlier conviction under five counts was unsupported by law and evidence. The judge noted that DHL, as a legal entity, bears responsibility for its shipments and found no proof that Omokide personally committed any crime or was negligent in his role as branch manager. Tracking records confirmed the parcel left the Benin office, and the prosecution failed to link its loss to any act by Omokide. The appeal succeeded in full. The High Court set aside the trial court’s verdict, discharged and acquitted Omokide, and ordered a refund of the ₦250,000 fine he had paid.

Looks like the prosecution's evidence couldn't meet the burden of proof for any of the five counts against Mr Omokide.

Acquitting him doesn't automatically mean parcel security will improve; we still need to address procedural gaps behind this whole episode.

Logistics firms should tighten tracking protocols and train staff thoroughly to avoid similar legal entanglements and protect their credibility.
