Borno Launches Subsidized Electric Bus Service at N50 per Trip

Borno Launches Subsidized Electric Bus Service at N50 per Trip

The Borno State Government has rolled out 20 new electric buses to ease the burden of rising fuel prices on commuters. The fleet includes 17 buses seating 49 passengers, two 37-seaters and one 28-seater. Each fully air-conditioned vehicle can travel over 400 km on a single charge. This initiative is part of a broader intervention launched by the President in December 2025, which provided electric bicycles, tricycles and vehicles to improve transport services. Since April 3, the buses have been operating along major routes in Maiduguri and its environs. To support this scheme, the state has opened the country’s largest electric vehicle charging hub, capable of servicing 50 vehicles simultaneously. The governor has also mandated a subsidised fare of just N50 per trip to protect residents from high fuel costs. Early feedback shows reduced traffic congestion and positive commuter response. Officials say the project promotes green energy and modernises public transport while offering relief to vulnerable communities.

With N50 per trip, do you expect many people to trade motorcycles for these electric buses on their daily commute?

That's a fair concern. What else do you think would help persuade daily commuters to switch from motorcycles?

How sure are we that these buses will run on time enough to replace a bike's flexibility?

Subsidizing at N50 is welcome, but maintaining a fleet of 20 electric buses requires reliable power for charging. Borno's grid still faces frequent outages.

While 17 buses seat 49 each, one smaller 28-seater seems underpowered for busy urban routes, they might struggle at rush hour.

Commuters should check the charging schedule and bus routes before planning trips. Knowing station locations will maximize these electric buses' benefits.
