INEC Unveils New Party Regulations to Strengthen 2027 Elections

INEC Unveils New Party Regulations to Strengthen 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission has rolled out updated Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The revisions align with the Electoral Act 2026 and close gaps from the 2022 framework. INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan highlighted that the technical review ensures the rules are legally sound and practical. Key updates cover party registration, mergers, internal operations, primaries, campaign financing, and deregistration conditions. Special focus is on transparent party primaries to reduce disputes and boost voter confidence. New spending limits and benchmarks for the inclusion of women, youth, and persons with disabilities have also been introduced. With tight timelines for the January 16 presidential and National Assembly polls and February 6 governorship and state assembly elections, INEC urges parties to see these guidelines as safeguards for credible results.
