Wake-up Call: Warri–Itakpe Train Tragedy Exposes Gaps in Rail Safety
The derailment of the Warri–Itakpe train near Agbor claimed four lives and injured dozens. Over 480 passengers, crew and service staff were on board when the accident struck. We mourn the victims and pray for the injured. Despite heavy investments and new routes since 2020, this corridor has faced disruptions and past derailments. Questions now arise about track maintenance, safety inspections and emergency response readiness. A transparent, public investigation is needed—not to assign blame, but to prevent a repeat. Findings must guide routine checks of tracks, coaches, signalling systems and the training of emergency teams. As Nigeria expands its rail network, measuring success by kilometres built means little if lives are lost. Safety standards must match our ambitions so that every journey is secure.
