FG Demands Compensation from Côte d'Ivoire after Nigerian Trader Dies in Abidjan Prison

FG Demands Compensation from Côte d'Ivoire after Nigerian Trader Dies in Abidjan Prison

The Federal Government summoned the Ivorian ambassador to protest the death of 24-year-old Nigerian trader Usama Murtala in an Abidjan prison. The government is seeking compensation for his family. Murtala was among six traders arrested in August 2025 while travelling by road from Sokoto to Abidjan for business. Five were released after diplomatic intervention, but Murtala died in custody. The minister said the men were held without charge, denied legal representation and endured harsh conditions. Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs criticised the lack of notice from Ivorian authorities and called for a full investigation. She urged Abidjan to ensure Nigerian nationals receive fair treatment and dignity in future. The Ivorian ambassador offered condolences and pledged to relay Nigeria’s concerns to his government.

It's odd that Nigerian authorities waited this long before confronting the Ivorian ambassador about the trader's death.

Compensation sounds reasonable, but I doubt this demand will change Abidjan's policies or bring the young trader back.

The FG should work with local legal teams in Ivory Coast to fast-track any investigation and secure timely compensation for the bereaved family.
