Lagos Empowers Women Entrepreneurs with New Economic Initiatives

Lagos Empowers Women Entrepreneurs with New Economic Initiatives

Lagos State Government has renewed its focus on women’s role in driving economic growth. At the International Women’s Day gathering for MSMEs and nano businesses, the Commerce Commissioner highlighted the central place of female entrepreneurs in the state’s development agenda. Moving beyond policy declarations, the administration has launched targeted programmes and formed strategic partnerships to boost women’s participation in trade, technology, manufacturing, agriculture and the creative sector. These initiatives aim to turn commitments into practical support. Funding access is paired with capacity building through business management training, digital tools and improved market linkages. The goal is to help women earn income, own assets, invest and shape decisions that affect their livelihoods. The Commissioner also urged the passage of the Reserved Seats Bill to strengthen women’s political representation. Senior ministry officials noted ongoing collaborations with private sector and development partners to simplify business registration and expand opportunities for women-led enterprises.

I'm not convinced that simply spotlighting women at a ceremony will translate into tangible loans or market access for MSMEs.

Local business networks could partner with Lagos authorities to set up mentorship schemes and grant workshops tailored for female-run micro ventures.
