Tuchel Urges Parents to Let Kids Stay Up for England’s World Cup Game

Tuchel Urges Parents to Let Kids Stay Up for England’s World Cup Game — 1 of 2
1 / 2

England manager Thomas Tuchel has asked parents to write their children an excuse for school so they can watch England’s last-16 World Cup match against Mexico. After conceding an early goal to DR Congo’s Brian Cipenga, Harry Kane scored twice in the final 15 minutes to secure a 2-1 win. It was only the second time England have come from behind to win a World Cup fixture, the first being the 1966 final. Looking ahead to the knockout tie at Mexico City’s high-altitude Estadio Azteca, Tuchel said he needs the backing of every fan, especially the youngest. “Write an excuse for school and let them watch,” he said. “The World Cup only comes around every four years and we need their support.” England now faces the challenge of adapting to over 2,000 metres above sea level in their next match.

It seems surprising that Tuchel, known as a coach, would weigh in on parents' role in kids' education and sleep schedules.

Enjoying the match is great, but asking parents to excuse kids from school sets a risky precedent. Education shouldn't be sidelined so quickly.

Parents could consider recording the match and letting kids watch highlights after school, balancing both the game excitement and their academic responsibilities.
