Taskforce Warns Rushing State Police Could Undermine National Security
The Steering Committee on State Police, inaugurated by the IGP and led by Prof. Olu Ogunsakin, has warned that a shortened rollout timeline poses serious risks. They argue Nigeria needs time to manage massive reforms, avoid security vacuums and maintain federal force capacity. The committee highlighted threats from rushed transfers, gaps in infrastructure and training, and unprepared oversight bodies that could lead to uneven standards across the 36 states and the FCT. To reduce these risks, they proposed a 60-month phased plan. Years 1–5 would focus on constitutional amendments, oversight creation, voluntary transfers, facility development, joint operations testing, audits and public feedback through the National Police Standards Board. They also recommended that about 60% of police personnel join state forces through a Voluntary Transfer Programme. Incentives include salary grants, transition training, pension continuity and special provisions for retiring, injured and female officers.
