Tony Elumelu: Celebrating the Father of Africapitalism

Tony Elumelu: Celebrating the Father of Africapitalism

I celebrate Mr. Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, as the true father of Africapitalism and a lasting influence in my life as boss, mentor, and friend. I witnessed his vision take shape at Standard Trust Bank, where he challenged the limits of African banking. Later at UBA, he made a bold bet on our continent and forced the world to sit up and take notice. Under his leadership, I grew from an observer into a confident leader. As chairman of Transcorp, his faith in people led me through seven demanding yet rewarding years as CEO of Transcorp Hotels, and later as President and Group CEO of Transcorp Plc. TOE’s high standards were never for show—they reflected his belief that Africa deserves excellence. What stands out most is his commitment to empowerment. The Tony Elumelu Foundation drives opportunities for thousands of young entrepreneurs across Africa. Today, I honour the man, the mentor, and the movement. Happy Birthday, TOE!

Definitely, opening dedicated funding channels for homegrown entrepreneurs reshaped how banks support real pan-African growth.

Are you asking about his introduction of Africapitalism in banking or a specific action like capital deployment?

It's impressive to call him father of Africapitalism, but many other leaders have promoted similar visions in African finance.

I'm not convinced that banking alone makes someone father of Africapitalism, his UBA role was bold but not entirely groundbreaking.

Building on his approach, entrepreneurs should focus on scalable models that balance profit with community development across different markets.
