Mourinho Explains the Three Casillas Requests That Alarmed Him at Real Madrid

José Mourinho has revisited the breakdown of his relationship with Iker Casillas during his first spell as Real Madrid manager. In a recent documentary, Mourinho said Casillas made three early requests as captain: more holidays for Spain internationals, later training sessions because of Madrid traffic, and an end to pre-match hotel stays. Mourinho said the requests convinced him that stronger discipline was needed in the squad. Their relationship later became strained, with Casillas losing his starting place to Diego López during the 2012/13 season. Casillas has also described their relationship at the time as cold. Despite the fallout, Mourinho won the Copa del Rey in 2011 and La Liga in 2012, when Madrid reached a record 100 points.

Asking for holidays and later sessions does not automatically sound alarming; the wider relationship clearly mattered too.
