Lagos Must Enforce Safe Standing-Passenger Limits on BRT Buses

Overcrowding on Lagos BRT buses has turned a vital public transport service into a daily safety concern for many commuters. During peak periods, passengers are often packed into buses with little room to move, while bulky bags and goods block the aisles. A commuter travelling from Ikorodu to Victoria Island says the conditions can be exhausting before the workday even begins. Excessive standing passengers can make sudden braking, sharp turns and emergency evacuation more dangerous. It also pushes some residents towards costlier ride-hailing services or less safe transport alternatives. Lagos needs clear and enforceable limits on the number of standing passengers allowed in each BRT bus. The government should increase the fleet during rush hours, monitor operators more closely, penalise overcrowding and educate passengers on safe boarding practices. Affordable transport should not come at the expense of safety, dignity or comfort. Stronger occupancy standards can help make BRT services safer and more reliable for Lagos commuters.
