Why Christian Baptism Matters: Purpose and Biblical Basis
Christian baptism is a command of Jesus that identifies believers with His death, burial and resurrection. Through immersion, it symbolizes the washing away of sins and the start of a new life empowered by the Holy Spirit. The New Testament teaches that those who believe and are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ receive remission of sins (Mark 16:16; Acts 2:38) and are united with His death and resurrection (Romans 6:3–5; Colossians 2:12). Jesus instructed followers to baptize in the singular name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). The early church consistently baptized “in the name of Jesus Christ” as the only name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 10:48; Acts 19:5).
