Bandits Kill Nine Farmers and Abduct Others in Birnin Gwari, Kaduna
At least nine farmers were killed and several others kidnapped when armed bandits attacked farmlands near Kakangi village in Birnin Gwari LGA on Saturday. The gunmen opened fire on villagers working during the rainy season. A security report prepared for the United Nations states the assailants returned with reinforcements after one of their members was killed in an attempted robbery earlier that day. Six victims have been formally identified, and local leaders say the death toll may be as high as ten. Despite a peace agreement brokered in late 2024, violence in farming communities across northern Nigeria has continued. Armed gangs now frequently raid villages, abduct residents for ransom, rustle cattle and impose illegal levies on farmers.
