1 / 3

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has praised the restitution of the Benin Bronzes as a landmark moment for the kingdom. He reaffirmed that the artefacts rightfully belong to the Palace of the Oba of Benin and urged that they not be politicised. Receiving a delegation from the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, the governor thanked the Swiss Government for its support in returning the artefacts. The visit included the NCMM Director-General and representatives from Swiss cultural institutions. The NCMM reaffirmed its commitment to repatriating more Bronzes from global collections. Members of the delegation will later present some of the returned pieces at the Oba’s Palace for traditional blessings. Switzerland’s Consul General in Lagos described the partnership as a milestone in cultural cooperation and expressed hope that it will deepen ties between both countries.

Rather than just celebrating, let's invest in proper museum facilities and local training programs to preserve those artefacts sustainably.
