1 / 3

The National Judicial Council has proposed elevating twelve High Court judges to fill vacancies in the Court of Appeal. These openings arose from promotions to the Supreme Court, retirements and deaths. The nominees include Justice Yakubu Abdulhammed (Gombe), Justice Monisola Abodunde (Ekiti), Justice Raphael Ajuwa (Bayelsa), Justice Elias Abua (Cross River), Justice Mbalamen Ijohor (Benue), Justice Sabiu Shuaibu (Kebbi), Justice James Omotosho (Ogun), Justice Emeka Nwite (Ebonyi), Justice Dauda Buba (Taraba), Justice Sanusi Kado (Katsina), Justice Enikuomehin Ademola (Ondo) and Justice Julcit Dadom (Plateau). The Council also adopted a new policy to appoint retired public servants who have at least ten years remaining before the mandatory retirement age. The recommendations now await presidential approval and Senate confirmation.

Which factors should guide NJC's choice among those twelve High Court judges for appellate roles?

I agree, their depth of experience, commitment to fair judgements and efficiency in clearing case backlogs deserve top consideration.

It's interesting that vacancies arose from retirements, promotions, even deaths, yet we hear little on geographic balance among nominees.

Actually, NJC guidelines usually mandate zonal representation. Might just need full report for clarity.

I'm not convinced these selections reflect merit over seniority and connections; they risk overlooking more capable judges for the Court of Appeal.

Perhaps the NJC could publish detailed evaluation reports on each nominee's track record to ensure transparency and public trust.
