Becoming Hope: Genesis of a Survivor

Hope, nineteen, wakes to a sudden storm of attention. Bloggers camp outside her gate and everyone in Nigeria has an opinion—some call her a genius, others a monster. To understand why, you must know her past. Born into her father’s tenth marriage in a Benue farming compound, Hope grew up beloved by her mother but scorned by ten rival wives. When her father dies after eating pepper soup, her mother is accused of poisoning him. In a dramatic trial by ordeal, Hope and her siblings drink the same soup to prove their innocence. Freed but powerless, Hope’s family falls under the control of the eldest wife, Mama Favour. To save her children, Hope’s mother sends her to Port Harcourt as a housegirl with a promise of education. Hope vows to survive—and one day return for her family.

I agree that Hope's rise shows how we celebrate young women's resilience but also expect them to represent us all.

It's striking that bloggers camp outside her gate without first understanding her experiences in that Benue farming compound.

I'm not convinced we need every detail of her father's tenth marriage to judge her resilience or character.

It might help to read her full narrative before debating her genius or monstrosity, then discuss key passages.
