From Rejection to Cornerstone: The Rise of Dangote Petroleum Refinery

From Rejection to Cornerstone: The Rise of Dangote Petroleum Refinery — 1 of 2
1 / 2

I first encountered Psalm 118:22 as a child while studying the New Testament. Jesus spoke of the stone the builders rejected becoming the cornerstone. In 2025, I wrote “The Rich Also Cry” about Aliko Dangote’s battle to secure crude for his new refinery. Legacy export deals left little for domestic use, so he sourced oil internationally and pushed operations forward. The 650,000 barrels-per-day Dangote Refinery in Lagos faced fierce opposition at home. Importers and unions resisted phasing out fuel import licences. The government eventually had to mediate labour disputes and licensing issues. By early 2026, Middle East conflicts cut global supply and sent prices soaring. Suddenly, the refinery became a lifeline. It runs at full capacity and now exports across Africa. The stone once rejected has become our energy cornerstone.

What do you think drove Dangote from early export struggles to building a cornerstone refinery, as mentioned in that 2025 account?

You talk true—I suspect that unshakeable drive and knack for risk-taking made the big difference.

It's interesting how biblical imagery is used to frame the refinery story, but I wonder if that overshadows the actual logistical challenges faced.

Focusing on Psalm references feels a bit dramatic when the real issue was negotiating crude supply deals with legacy exporters.

A smart next step would be comparing Dangote's refinery tactics with other emerging African projects to spot effective sourcing strategies.
