Outrage in DRC: Families Burn Ebola Clinic as 18 Suspected Patients Flee
At least 18 people suspected of having Ebola escaped from Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital in Ituri province, DRC, after grieving relatives attacked the facility. Angry residents burned tents set up by Médecins Sans Frontières and tried to seize the bodies of loved ones who died from the virus. Medical teams later tested four escapees, confirming one case. Hospital director Dr Richard Lokodu warned the confirmed patient remains at large, raising fears of further spread. Health officials blame misinformation and distrust for resistance to Ebola measures, while WHO says the outbreak is outpacing response efforts. Neighbouring Uganda has also reported new cases among health workers in Kampala. The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, making containment especially challenging.
