Four Mumbai Family Members Die After Eating Rat-Poisoned Watermelon
Forensic tests have linked the deaths of a Mumbai family of four to zinc phosphide, a toxic rat poison. Investigators say traces were found in the watermelon the victims ate shortly before falling critically ill. A detailed forensic science report confirmed zinc phosphide in the victims’ viscera, stomach contents, bile and abdominal fat samples. The watermelon sample also tested positive, while other foods from the family gathering showed no contamination. Police are still probing whether the poison was introduced accidentally, intentionally or with criminal intent. No rat poison was found in the home, and officials have ruled out other dishes and medicines consumed that evening.
