Rape Suspect Flees Police Custody During Scene Visit in Port Harcourt

A suspected rapist known only as Goodnews escaped from police custody in Port Harcourt while being escorted by an Investigating Police Officer (IPO) to the scene of the crime. He had been arrested last week in Rumudomaya for allegedly defiling a 16-year-old girl in Obio/Akpor LGA and transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department. The victim’s father said the IPO allowed him to fetch a hammer to break a locked gate. When he returned, the officer said the suspect had broken free. He chased the direction the officer pointed to but could not find him. The Rivers State Police Command confirmed the escape and said efforts are under way to re-arrest the suspect as the investigation continues.
