‘House of Lies’: A Tale of Mother-In-Law Intrigue and Costly Deception

‘House of Lies’: A Tale of Mother-In-Law Intrigue and Costly Deception

‘House of Lies’ is a new Yoruba family drama that lays bare the tensions in many African homes, where a mother-in-law’s influence can either uphold or destroy a marriage. The film follows Akeem (Akeem Ogara), whose mother (Remi Oshodi) controls his household and sidelines his wife. When a delayed pregnancy becomes an issue, the mother pushes Akeem into taking another wife. Debbie Shokoya’s character, aided by her boyfriend, stages a fake pregnancy to gain his trust and strip him of his wealth. In a surprising twist, the first wife advises Akeem to take a third wife, seeking revenge for the humiliation she endured. Nafisat Abolade’s character brings yet another hidden agenda that leads to the family’s collapse. The story serves as a cautionary reminder about the dangers of excessive parental interference, deceptive polygamy and the irreparable cost of misplaced trust.

Totally, those heated dinner visits really showcase her sneaky influence and keep the young couple on edge.

It seems the film leans heavily into stereotypical mother-in-law drama without exploring what motivates her behavior.

I no too dey convinced say Remi Oshodi's character simply wants to wreck the marriage—maybe she do it for valid family reasons.

Filmmakers could improve balance by showing the mother-in-law's backstory and her relationship with Akeem before marriage.
