Easy Guide to Growing Scent Leaf (African Basil) from Seeds
Scent leaf, also known as African basil (Ocimum gratissimum), is widely used in Nigerian soups, teas and traditional remedies. It thrives in warm weather and brings fresh aromatic leaves for months when properly cared for. This herb grows well in gardens, containers, sacks or balcony pots. It needs four to six hours of sunlight daily, moist but well-drained soil and regular watering if planted outside the rainy season. Start by choosing small, dark, dry seeds free of mold or damage. The rainy season is ideal for sowing, but you can plant in dry months with extra watering. Clear weeds, loosen the soil and mix in compost or manure to create a loose, loamy bed. Sow seeds on the prepared surface, cover lightly, and keep the soil consistently moist. Within a week or two you should see sprouts that will grow into strong, aromatic plants ready for harvest.
