State Police Framework Nears Completion, Presidency Confirms
The Presidency says the constitutional framework for state police is almost ready. Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila announced this after a high-level consultative meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. He explained that President Bola Tinubu ordered consultations three to four months ago. Deliberations have reached an advanced stage and the proposed constitutional amendment is expected to be unveiled soon, with enabling legislation to follow. Discussions now focus on oversight, accountability, funding and operational effectiveness. The goal is to build a sustainable, workable model that meets local security needs. Advocates argue state police will boost grassroots intelligence and speed up responses to security threats. Top lawmakers and senior security officials were among those who attended the meeting.
