UN Allocates $60M to Tackle Fast-Spreading Ebola in Eastern DR Congo
The UN is rushing emergency teams, funds and supplies into eastern DR Congo as a fast-growing Ebola outbreak spreads through conflict-ravaged provinces. The WHO has raised the national risk level in DR Congo to “very high” while the global threat remains low. At least 82 cases and seven deaths have been confirmed, though hundreds more are suspected. UN Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher announced $60 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to support response efforts in DR Congo and neighbouring countries. He warned of challenges from ongoing fighting, mass displacement and mistrust of authorities. Two cases linked to DR Congo travel have been confirmed in Uganda, and two American nationals have been transferred to Europe for treatment. The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has no approved vaccine or treatment.
