Ejiofor Urges AU to Hold South Africa Accountable for Xenophobic Attacks on Nigerians
Nigerian human rights lawyer Ifeanyi Ejiofor has criticised the South African government for failing to protect Nigerians amid rising xenophobic attacks. In his latest commentary, he urged the African Union to hold South Africa to its international human rights obligations, stressing that foreign nationals deserve equal protection on African soil. Ejiofor highlighted that political scandals like the PFIPC issue often dominate headlines but fade without accountability, unlike the unfolding crisis against Nigerians in South Africa. He warned that dismissive remarks by South African officials further erode trust and violate principles of justice and equality. Citing the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the African Charter, and other international treaties, he argued that organised xenophobic violence and discrimination against Nigerians breaches binding obligations. He called on African leaders to move beyond diplomatic platitudes and demonstrate genuine Pan-African solidarity.
