Tinubu Says Diaspora Health Workers Will Drive Nigeria’s Healthcare Reform
President Bola Tinubu says Nigerian medical professionals abroad will be central to efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system. Speaking through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the 2026 National Diaspora Day celebration in Abuja, Tinubu said diaspora doctors, nurses, researchers and public health experts can support local healthcare delivery through their skills, networks and investments. He said the Federal Government plans to institutionalise the Diaspora Healthcare Impact Initiative. The proposed platform would coordinate diaspora contributions, offer incentives to health professionals who return to practice or invest in Nigeria, and track the impact of medical missions across the country. Tinubu acknowledged challenges including poor infrastructure, shortages of skilled personnel, limited specialised care and policy gaps. He urged Nigerians abroad to help build a more resilient and inclusive health system.
