Senior ISWAP Commanders and 76 Fighters Surrender to Troops in Nigeria’s North-East

Senior ISWAP Commanders and 76 Fighters Surrender to Troops in Nigeria’s North-East

Senior leaders of the Islamic State West Africa Province and 76 foot soldiers, alongside some of their family members, have laid down their arms and surrendered to Operation HADIN KAI troops in the North-East. The Acting Military Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, Capt. Muhammad Goni, said the militants abandoned their enclaves after sustained offensives and mounting operational pressure across the theatre. Capt. Goni added that the strategic commanders opted to surrender following credible, timely intelligence. They are now in a secure location undergoing profiling, debriefing and other procedures in line with operational protocols. He also disclosed that within the past week, 76 foot soldiers and members of their families have come forward to surrender, marking a fresh breakthrough in the counter-terrorism campaign against Boko Haram and ISWAP.

What assurances exist that these commanders won't rejoin insurgents after surrendering?

It's unusual for so many high-ranking ISWAP members and their families to surrender together without any pushback from their own network.

I'm not convinced this surrender signals lasting peace; similar events in the past often didn't stop fresh attacks soon after.

Local authorities should use this opportunity to provide reintegration programs and ensure surrendered fighters help rebuild affected communities.
