Obasanjo Accuses Atiku of Funding N5m Impeachment Plot Against Him
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo addressed former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba in a letter, denying accusations over the 2003 general elections and making new allegations against his ex-deputy. Obasanjo claims that Vice President Atiku Abubakar invited Speaker Ghali Na’Abba to his office on a Friday, convinced him that the president should serve only one term, and handed over N5 million to kick off impeachment proceedings. The former president says this conspiracy was recorded by his Chief of Staff. After the initial effort failed, Obasanjo alleges Atiku pursued a “two-track” plan: aligning with former Vice President Alex Ekwueme on the promise of future power transfer, and courting six Southwest governors to back his 2007 presidential bid. He also notes that former President Shehu Shagari offered to intervene when informed of the impeachment threat. These claims form part of Obasanjo’s response to criticism that he misled Alliance for Democracy leaders ahead of the elections.
