Florida Teacher Arrested for Secretly Recording Private Conversation

Florida Teacher Arrested for Secretly Recording Private Conversation

An elementary school teacher in Florida was charged this month with illegally recording a private conversation. Dana Leigh Palka, 31, faces a third-degree felony count of eavesdropping. The arrest took place in Hernando County. Investigators say Palka used her phone to tape a December 29 discussion in Zephyrhills without the other party’s consent. The recording came to light after the victim noticed her phone mic was unusually close. Palka later admitted to the taping during a recorded follow-up. Florida’s two-party consent law requires everyone in a private setting to agree before any recording. Violators can face up to five years in prison, probation, and hefty fines. Palka is due for arraignment on April 16 and remains employed by her school district.
