Freed Kwara Abductees Allege Helicopter Delivered Money to Kidnappers

Some women and children freed after the Woro community abduction in Kaiama LGA, Kwara State, have reportedly told relatives that a helicopter delivered money to their kidnappers shortly before their release. A relative said two former captives were surprised by the Federal Government’s claim that they were rescued in a security operation without ransom payment. The victims allegedly said they saw a helicopter bring money to the camp about four to five days before they were freed, although they were kept away from it. Security agencies said 163 Woro victims were among more than 300 people recovered in an intelligence-led operation. The Woro captives had spent nearly six months in the forest, where survivors reported hunger, poor medical care and harsh weather. Thirteen of the 176 people initially abducted were reported to have died in captivity. The allegation raises fresh questions about whether negotiations or payments played a role in the victims’ release, as authorities have provided limited details about the operation.
