Unvaccinated Children Push California Measles Count to 34
California has confirmed two new measles cases in Sacramento County, bringing the statewide total to 34. All new infections involve unvaccinated children. Dr. Olivia Kasirye, Sacramento County Public Health Officer, warned that measles can spread rapidly in unprotected populations. She urged everyone to get vaccinated to prevent serious illness. Measles is the world’s most contagious disease but poses little risk to those who have received the MMR vaccine. Common symptoms appear seven to 14 days after exposure and include high fever, runny nose, cough and rash. Health authorities report cases in 33 states so far, with 92% of infections occurring in unvaccinated individuals or those with unclear vaccination status. A total of 1,671 cases have been confirmed nationwide in 2026.
