National Assembly Passes State Police Bill – What It Means for Our Security

Kudos to the National Assembly for passing the State Police Bill, a landmark decision for security in Nigeria. Now it’s up to state assemblies to ratify the amendment so states can enforce their own laws without federal agencies overriding them. I believe local governments should also be empowered to establish their own police services. When I studied at Obafemi Awolowo University, the campus police called The Crackers patrolled effectively despite limited resources. We should go further by licensing private security companies with professional training and equipment. Decentralising security in this way can make communities safer and more accountable.

It sounds promising, but most states haven't shown they can fund or train a local police force effectively without Abuja's help.

True, many states lack resources, but local police accountability might improve with proper checks, not just Abuja control.

I'm not sure state police will improve security; crime often crosses state borders, so coordinated federal efforts remain essential.

State assemblies should establish clear oversight committees and allocate budgets for training before fully empowering local police units.
