IMF Report on Nigeria’s Fiscal Reporting vs Atiku’s ‘2% GDP Theft’ Claim
I thought of a Yoruba proverb: 'A lie cannot have two victims. If the one being deceived does not know the truth, the one telling the lie certainly does.' It captures the gulf between the IMF’s remarks and Atiku Abubakar’s spin. The IMF report focused on the presentation, timing and comprehensiveness of Nigeria’s fiscal data. It flagged gaps in how government spending is reported—not allegations of stolen funds. Atiku translated this into a headline-grabbing ‘2% of GDP was stolen’ claim. This distinction matters. If everyday Nigerians struggle to see the technical difference, that is understandable. But a former Vice President and veteran policymaker should know. He either misread a clear observation or chose to stretch it for political effect.
