Trial Witness Calls Emefiele’s $6.23m Release for Election Observers 'Pure Theft'

Trial Witness Calls Emefiele’s $6.23m Release for Election Observers 'Pure Theft'

A police commissioner from the Fraud Unit told the FCT High Court that former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele’s release of $6.23 million for foreign election observers was “pure theft.” He identified a presidential directive as Exhibit PD5, saying the memo was fraudulent and the funds were diverted for other purposes. The investigative team recovered about $800,000 from the alleged stolen sum. Jibril Abubakar was named as the person who collected the money. Under cross-examination, the witness said proper procedure was not followed and questioned signatures on key documents. The trial continues on July 3, 2026.

What impact could labeling Emefiele's memo as fraudulent have on public trust in the Central Bank and election oversight?

It's telling that the accusation depends entirely on that presidential directive memo, yet we haven't seen any detailed audit trail or corroborating documents.

Seems premature to brand it pure theft without hearing Emefiele's representatives explain how the funds were authorized under the directive.

Observers should insist on full access to financial records and cross-check any presidential directives against audited versions before drawing legal conclusions.
