Axel Tuanzebe’s Extra-Time Strike Sends DR Congo to First World Cup in 52 Years

Axel Tuanzebe’s Extra-Time Strike Sends DR Congo to First World Cup in 52 Years

DR Congo sealed their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup thanks to Axel Tuanzebe’s extra-time winner against Jamaica. The Manchester United academy graduate bundled home from close range in the 100th minute to end DR Congo’s 52-year absence. The Leopards dominated from the outset. Cédric Bakambu had two goals ruled out for offside and Meschack Elia rattled the woodwork, but Jamaica’s defense held firm until extra time. Jamaica struggled to create chances, with Kasey Palmer’s effort their only real threat. Despite late pressure, DR Congo held on and could have added to their tally. The Leopards will join Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group H at the World Cup. Jamaica’s hopes of qualifying for the second straight tournament end in disappointment.

DR Congo should focus on strengthening their defence and midfield chemistry before 2026 to build on this historic qualification.
