Kwara Monarch Vows Not to Return to Palace Until Security Improves
The traditional ruler of Owa-Onire, Oba AbdulRahman Fabiyi, has abandoned his palace and now lives on the outskirts of Ilorin. He fled after armed men broke into his home on December 31 and kidnapped two of his aides. A year earlier, the monarch was held hostage for seven days until his community paid a ₦5 million ransom. He says Onire lacks a police station, forest guards and adequately equipped vigilantes. Oba Fabiyi insists he will not return until the government provides real security. He notes that other rulers in neighbouring areas like Owa Kajola, Oke-Oyin and Ofaro have also left their domains over similar threats. Despite his displacement, he continues to perform his duties remotely. Community members travel to see him when necessary, and he still settles disputes from his current location.
