Abia Doctors Threaten Indefinite Strike Over Abducted Surgeon
The Abia branch of the Nigerian Medical Association has given security agencies and the governments of Abia and Imo states a 24-hour deadline to free orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Bonaventure Aguocha. He was kidnapped on May 24 while returning to Umuahia from Imo State. The NMA warns that if Dr. Aguocha is not released by 8 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, doctors in Abia State will begin a total, indefinite strike. The association described this abduction as part of a troubling pattern of attacks on medical practitioners. It called on the DSS, the Inspector-General of Police, state police commissioners, governors of both states, traditional rulers, community leaders and well-meaning Nigerians to use every resource and influence to secure his immediate release. The NMA cautioned that failure to act could erode healthcare workers’ trust in government and disrupt medical services across Abia and Imo states.
