Kano Court Hands Down Death Sentence to Two Men for Killing Friend Over Football Dispute
A Kano High Court has sentenced Yusuf Ahmad of Rijiyar Lemo Quarters and Auwal Abdulhamid of Bachirawa Quarters to death by hanging. The two men were found guilty of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide after their friend, Ibrahim Umar-Mahmud, was fatally stabbed. The offence occurred on June 7, 2025, when a disagreement over football led Ahmad and Abdulhamid to attack Umar-Mahmud with a knife. He was rushed to Waziri Gidado Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Justice Musa Dahuru-Muhammad ruled that the prosecution had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt. Prosecutors called five witnesses and presented exhibits to support their case. Defence counsel Mubarak Muhammad allowed the convicts to testify on their own behalf, but the court found them guilty under Sections 97(1) and 221(a) of the Penal Code Law. With the conviction upheld, the judge ordered that Ahmad and Abdulhamid be executed by hanging as prescribed by law.
