First Deaf Lawyer from Northern Nigeria: Nehemiah Shanum Danjuma’s Historic Milestone

First Deaf Lawyer from Northern Nigeria: Nehemiah Shanum Danjuma’s Historic Milestone — 1 of 3
1 / 3

Nehemiah Shanum Danjuma made history this week by becoming the first deaf lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar from Northern Nigeria. He proudly walked the stage in Abuja in his barrister’s wig and gown. He earned his LL.B at the University of Ilorin from 2018 to 2024 and completed the Nigerian Law School in Abuja for the 2025–2026 session. He also holds memberships in the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and the Institute of Linguists and Arbitrators, plus accreditation as a mediator. Friends and classmates flooded social media with congratulations. One friend learned sign language to communicate without notes, calling Nehemiah a life-changer. Others praised his perseverance and impact on future accessibility. His achievement shines a light on the need for universities to avoid defaulting deaf students into special education. Barrister Danjuma’s success breaks barriers and opens gates for many more.

I agree. His achievement will inspire more deaf graduates to consider law and help promote inclusivity in our legal system.

It's impressive, but I wonder if the legal system is truly ready to support deaf lawyers beyond this milestone.

While this is landmark news, one person alone doesn't solve broader accessibility challenges in Northern Nigeria's courts.

Law faculties and legal bodies should now develop sign language training and inclusive exam accommodations for future deaf law students.
