Borno Police Arrest Five Suspected of Selling Meat From Dead Cattle in Maiduguri
The Borno State Police Command has arrested five suspects accused of processing and selling meat from cattle that died naturally to unsuspecting buyers in Maiduguri. Police said the suspects were arrested on July 29, 2026, during an intelligence-led operation at the Old Maiduguri Cattle Market. They were allegedly transporting the carcass of a dead cow to Morumti for processing and distribution to roadside meat vendors. The police described the alleged activity as a serious public-health risk. Investigations are ongoing to identify other people in the supply network, while the suspects are expected to face charges after the investigation. The command said it will engage butchers, livestock dealers, meat vendors and regulatory agencies to improve compliance with food-safety standards. Residents were urged to report suspicious meat-processing or sales activities to the authorities.
