13 Suspected Black Axe Members Arrested During Cult Initiation in Eleme, Rivers

13 Suspected Black Axe Members Arrested During Cult Initiation in Eleme, Rivers

Security forces disrupted an alleged Aiye Confraternity (Black Axe) initiation ceremony in a forest between Alode and Onne in Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State. Thirteen suspects were arrested in the early hours of Sunday, while others fled deeper into the bush. An eyewitness said about 100 young men had gathered for the ritual. On seeing the operatives, many escaped, but over a dozen were detained at the scene. Rivers State Police confirmed the arrests and said investigations have begun. No further details were provided on the operation. The arrests form part of a joint security initiative by the Police, Army, Navy, Air Force, DSS, and NSCDC to curb cultism, kidnapping, and violent crime in the state.

It seems arrests alone might not stop these groups if others keep fleeing into the bush and reorganizing soon after.

I'm not convinced the report shows any long-term impact; cult networks adapt quickly to these brief security sweeps.

Local authorities should combine arrests with community education and reporting networks to prevent future initiation attempts.
