41 Fulani Herders Killed in Joint Nigeria–Benin Border Raid Over Suspected Ansaru Links
AFP sources report a joint operation by a state-backed militia, Nigerian soldiers and vigilantes from Benin targeted Fulani herders around Kabe in Borgu, Niger state. Security forces went door-to-door, detaining young men accused of spying for the al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansaru group. When some resisted, 41 suspects were killed and many others arrested. The military has not commented, and it remains unclear whether Beninese authorities approved the cross-border action. This border region has long been plagued by cattle rustling and jihadist violence. Experts warn that such reprisals risk driving more Fulani civilians towards extremist groups for protection.
