Rooney Warns Age Is Catching Up with Salah and Van Dijk

Rooney Warns Age Is Catching Up with Salah and Van Dijk — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney believes age is behind Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk’s dip in form this season. He drew on his own experience in 2016, when he lost his starting spot at United after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival, saying the hardest part is accepting you can’t perform at your old level. At 33 and 34, Salah and van Dijk still lead the dressing room. But Rooney warned that staying too long past your peak can hold back both players and the team.

Do you think Salah and Van Dijk can adapt their game as gracefully as Rooney did back in 2016 after Ibrahimovic arrived?

When you say adapt gracefully, are you referring to changes in their playing style or fitness levels?

They've shown smart positioning and passing, so I do believe they can adjust their play like Rooney managed.

It's interesting that Rooney points to age after he himself faced form issues post-32. Maybe there's more to their dip than just birthdays.

I'm not convinced age is the main culprit here. Injuries and tactical shifts probably play bigger roles than slowing legs alone.

If clubs expect ageing stars to maintain peak levels, they must adjust training loads and tactical roles to preserve performance longevity.
