WAFCON 2026: Malawi Unveils 32-Woman Squad for Group C Opener Against Nigeria

WAFCON 2026: Malawi Unveils 32-Woman Squad for Group C Opener Against Nigeria

Malawi coach Lovemore Fazili has named a 32-player provisional squad as preparations ramp up for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The team will be led by captain Tabitha Chawinga and vice-captain Temwa Chawinga, who returns to the fold after sitting out recent matches. Two under-20 players, Takondwa Chinyamvula and Fatima Lali, have also earned call-ups. Preparations begin at Mpira Village in Blantyre this Sunday. All foreign-based players will join camp at the start, with Faith Chimzimu, Asimenye Simwaka and Temwa Chawinga arriving later. Drawn in Group C alongside Nigeria’s Super Falcons, Zambia and Egypt, Malawi will face Nigeria in their opening match at Rabat’s Al Madina Stadium on Tuesday, July 28.

Given Tabitha Chawinga's return as captain, how do you think her leadership will influence Malawi's opener against Nigeria?

True! Tabitha always brings that spark—her pep talks will surely lift Malawi's spirits on kickoff day.

Fielding a 32-player provisional squad seems excessive given the final tournament roster is much smaller.

I'm not convinced that adding so many players at once fosters cohesion before such a big opening match.

Splitting the squad into positional groups during training could speed up selection and sharpen tactical clarity for coach Fazili.
