Plateau High Court Adjourns Appeal on Hausa Indigene Status to October 29
The Plateau State High Court in Jos has adjourned further hearings in the appeal over the recognition of Hausa people born and raised in Jos North as indigenes until October 29, 2026. The appeal challenges a June 9 ruling that granted a Hausa-born resident of Jos North Local Government Area the right to an indigene certificate. The suit was filed after the council refused to issue the certificate to Fatima Akawu, despite recognising her father as a bona fide indigene. During Friday’s session, counsel for Jos North Local Government Council objected to a new legal team representing the respondents without a formal notice of change of counsel. Respondents’ counsel argued that every party has the constitutional right to choose their lawyer. Observers say the final judgment could redefine indigene criteria across Nigeria and affect citizenship rights in other states.
