Jay-Jay Okocha Honoured with Retro World Cup ‘Player of the Match’ Award for 1998 Triumph Over Spain
Nigeria legend Jay-Jay Okocha has received a special ‘Player of the Match’ trophy from FIFA, 28 years after his starring role in the Super Eagles’ 3–2 victory over Spain at the 1998 World Cup opener. In a recent social media video, Okocha unveiled the silver award and thanked Michelob ULTRA and football platform Copa90 for arranging the recognition. This initiative honours exceptional World Cup displays from before the official award began in 2002. Organisers combed historical archives to identify standout performers across hundreds of matches. Okocha’s masterful dribbling and creative play at the Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes disrupted a Spanish defence featuring Fernando Hierro and Raúl. That day, Nigeria overturned a first-half deficit to win through goals by Mutiu Adepoju, an own goal, and Sunday Oliseh’s long-range strike, cementing Okocha’s legacy in World Cup history.
